This league is designed for friendly competition among Mahjong players of all levels who are comfortable playing independently. All players will use the 2026 National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card.
How the League Works
Players earn points each week based on their individual game results. Scores are cumulative across all four weeks.
At the end of the season, the player with the highest cumulative score will be crowned League Champion and take home a beautiful set of Mahjong tiles from Beck + Brix Home.
Mahjong players also receive 20% off at Beck + Brix Home on the day they play.
In-store only. Same-day purchases.
Weekly Play
Players check in upon arrival and receive a randomly assigned table.
Please arrive on time. A 5-minute grace period will be allowed before the first game begins. Late players may need to wait until the next game to join.
Players may not change tables or swap players unless instructed by the league organizer.
Each table plays for two hours.
Tables may play as many games as they can within the two-hour session, but only the first three completed games count toward that week’s league score.
Players must use the 2026 NMJL card.
Scoring
This league uses a simplified version of NMJL scoring. There are no standard NMJL penalty deductions during play.
Hand Value: The player who declares Mahjong receives the value of the winning hand listed on the NMJL card.
Pick Your Own Mahjong: +10 points when a player draws the tile needed to declare Mahjong.
No-Joker Bonus: +20 points when a winning hand contains no jokers.
No bonus is awarded for Singles & Pairs hands, which do not allow jokers. A joker exchanged from an exposure does not count as a joker in the final hand.
Wall Game: +10 points to each player when all tiles are used and no one declares Mahjong. A player whose hand is dead does not receive the bonus.
Incomplete Game: If a game is not completed within the allotted time, no points are awarded.
Scorecards & Standings
Each table will have a scorecard for the evening.
Players will work together to record scores for the first three completed games.
Each player is responsible for reviewing and confirming their own scores.
All players must initial the scorecard before it is turned in.
Scorecards must be submitted to the league organizer at the end of the session. Scores cannot be counted if a scorecard is forgotten or lost.
Scores and standings will be shared weekly.
League Standings
Scores are cumulative across all four weeks, so every week counts.
At the end of Week 4:
🥇 1st Place: Highest cumulative score
🥈 2nd Place: Second-highest cumulative score
🥉 3rd Place: Third-highest cumulative score
Tie Breaker: In the event of a tie, tied players will roll dice. The highest roll wins.
Attendance Policy
By registering, players are committing to all four sessions. We understand that things come up, so if you need to miss a week:
Find a substitute of a similar playing level, or
Provide at least 24 hours’ notice of your absence.
No-show without notice: 10 points will be deducted from your cumulative league score.
League Rules
Our league follows the National Mah Jongg League rules for American Mah Jongg, with the simplified scoring outlined above.
Most importantly, this is a social league with friendly competition. We want everyone to have fun, meet other Mahjong players, and enjoy the experience!
There are no blanks or extra jokers used in league play.
If a dispute or rules question arises, Jenn of Southbay Mahjong Society will make the final decision.
Cancellation & Refund Policy
All sales are final. Due to limited space, league registrations are non-refundable and cannot be transferred.
